Art is what I do. It has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. It intrigues me, challenges me, draws me in, and fills my days. It makes sense to me and always has, in an unfathomable sort of way.
I have a BFA from Syracuse University and a MFA from the University of Montana, Missoula. I taught art classes for decades, first at the University of Oregon and then in the University of Maine system. Along with teaching, I also made pottery which I sold in New York City for 30 years.
At age 53, I stopped making pottery, and started to paint. I painted well over a thousand watercolors, before more recently starting to work in oils. For the past 14 years I have lived and painted in Taos, New Mexico.
This group of New York City oil paintings is the body of work that I painted from 2019-2021. Some paintings are from a single photo; most are compilations of several photos. Like the streets, buildings, and people of New York City itself, these paintings are full of life. Please see for yourself.
My latest body of work, done in 2021 and 2022, is the Santa Fe and Taos New Mexico paintings. Having lived many years in the East, it took a while for light, huge open spaces, clarity and mystery of New Mexico to sink in. We have been here now for 14 years. Those western attributes are now in all the paintings. Please enjoy them.
Here is a quote from a review of my work shown at the Carver Hill Gallery, in Camden, Maine.
“ ‘Down Bowery Street, NYC’ is a large and lively compilation of five
views and three streets, looking downtown on a fresh summer day full
of sunshine, birds, traffic and pedestrians of all ages, colors and
stripes. Like all of Keller’s images, whether day or night, it is cheerful,
festive, full of joy. A flock of birds flaps into a sky full of little splashes
of color that open up space like confetti at a parade. The day feels
typically real though, not a holiday, except that you feel like Sinatra
singing, 'Start spreading the news — New York, New York!’ ”
